According to The Associated Press, Deobra Delone Redden, 30, was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday to answer to fresh accusations, but she chose not to show up for the appointment.
Redden’s court case was delayed for Tuesday morning, according to online records from the Clark County jail, and he was still being held without bond on Friday.
The incident happened during a hearing where District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus, who had found the 30-year-old defendant guilty of attempted violence causing significant bodily harm, was attempting to sentence him.
Redden was freed from detention after entering a guilty plea to the lesser charge in November. According to court documents, he was first accused of felony assault with a deadly weapon in relation to an attack using a baseball bat.
According to documents from the Nevada Department of Corrections, he was convicted of domestic violence for the third time and served time in jail in 2021.
Redden told the judge at the hearing, “I’m a person who will never stop trying to do the right thing, no matter how hard it is… I’m trying.” Redden was standing next to his attorney without any restraints.
She answered. I’m grateful for that, but I believe it’s time for you to experience something different since I can’t deal with the past.
He let out an instant “naw” and hurried over to the judge, throwing himself over the bench and yanking her to the ground by her hair.
At least three other courtroom participants attempted to remove Redden from the judge following the assault. On camera, one of them—a court clerk—can be seen striking Redden repeatedly. The judge is seen in an official court photo standing behind the bench with her head in her hand following the attack.
According to The Associated Press, a courtroom deputy had a head gash and a dislocated shoulder, but the judge only received minor injuries.
13 new charges filed:
According to jail records, Redden is currently facing 13 additional accusations, including extortion, coercion with force, intimidating a public official, and numerous instances of violence on a protected person.
Holthus was elected in 2018 after almost 27 years of service in the district attorney’s office, 16 of those years spent as a prosecutor in the special victims’ section, according to the District Court website.
