Johnny Depp initially saw Winona Ryder in 1989 when she attended the Great Balls of Fire premiere. Johnny Depp was 27 and Ryder was 18 at the time. They had a “classic glance,” Depp told Rolling Stone, akin to the “zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets foggy.” Although Depp said that he “knew then,” the couple didn’t start dating seriously for a few months.
Shortly after meeting Ryder, Depp told PEOPLE that he had never experienced anything in his 27 years that was like the emotion he has with Winona.
In just five months following their first date, the pair became engaged, and Depp even got the phrase “Winona Forever” tattooed on his leg. The pair starred together in Edward Scissorhands in 1990. Before calling it quits in June 1993, Depp and Ryder dated for three years.
When they broke up, Ryder reflected that it was her “first real breakup, the first heartbreak.”
I think it was really hilarious, she went on, because on the outside, everyone seemed to believe I had it all—I had no reason to be miserable, everything was kind of at its pinnacle—but on the inside, I was absolutely lost.
Years later, Ryder said that Depp was “never abusive at all during their relationship” and expressed her support for him in the midst of his legal issues with Heard. She acknowledged that their connection had ended a long time ago, but she also indicated that her experience differed “wildly” from what the media had been reporting.
She remarked, “All I know about him is that he’s a really nice, kind, caring guy who fiercely defends the people he loves.” It’s simply startling.
