Five different charities will each receive a portion of Johnny Depp‘s settlement from his defamation case with Amber Heard.
The five organisations that will receive donations of $200,000 each, totaling $1 million, are the Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Tetiaroa Society, and Amazonia Fund Alliance.
The Amazonia Fund Alliance is a confederation of sustainability-minded nonprofits and companies that focuses on defending, assisting, and preserving Indigenous communities in the Amazon. Red Feather works to develop and implement housing solutions for American Indigenous communities. Prior to this, Depp and the Make-A-Film Foundation worked together on a short film that granted the wishes of kids with serious or life-threatening illnesses.

The Painted Turtle, a free summer camp for children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses near Lake Elizabeth in California, was co-founded by Paul Newman. The Tetiaroa Society, which supports the natural and cultural conservation efforts of the tiny Marlon Brando-leased atoll near Tahiti, also has Hollywood ties.
The contribution is a part of a larger settlement between Heard and Depp that was made public in December and in which Depp received $10 million and Heard received $2 million.
We are happy to officially put an end to this difficult chapter for Mr. Depp, who made it clear throughout this process that his priority was about bringing the truth to light, according to a statement from Depp’s lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez to THR.
Heard stated in a statement on Instagram that she chose to settle in order to avoid going through yet another time-consuming and expensive judicial procedure in which she would have been unable to defend me and my right to free expression. She added that she had used practically all of my resources leading up to and during a trial.
Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defaming him over the op-ed in March 2019. The complaint claimed that even though Depp was not specifically mentioned, it was obvious that Heard was making reference to him. A jury found in his favour on three of his claims in May 2022 while finding against him on one, awarding him more than $10 million.
Additionally, Heard received $2 million for comments made by Depp’s attorney. Before Heard made the Dec. 19 public announcement of the settlement, both parties appealed the judgement.
Depp filed a libel suit in 2020 against a British publication. The Sun reprimanded.
