Disputed territories can persist for decades, even millennia. They can be found all over the world and are intricate and practically always changing. Rivalries between nations or peoples are one of the causes of several of these conflicts. But the majority of them frequently contain assertions of previous ownership. Some of these disputed territories conflicts didn’t even result in a decisive war as a resolution. A defeated military force may simply refuse to give up its claim.
Browse the following gallery to learn more about some of the most contentious regions in the globe, from Kashmir to Crimea.
Most Disputed Territories in the World
Gaza Strip and the West Bank:
It is hard to overlook the geographic regions that Israel and Palestine claim as their own. The lands, which were formerly a part of Mandate Palestine, were taken by Israel in 1967’s Six-Day War.
As part of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and in the hopes of an eventual two-state solution, numerous attempts have been made to end the war.
However, there is still occupation and blockade in some areas. The war claimed the lives of 150 Palestinians, making 2022 the worst year since 2004.
Crimea:
Crimea, a peninsula by the Black Sea with a predominately Russian-speaking populace, joined Ukraine in 1954. At the time, both Russia and Ukraine were a part of the Soviet Union.
2014 saw Russia attack Ukraine in February and March and then annex Crimea. Following the Revolution of Dignity, this occurred.
Further Ukrainian territories:
The battle significantly intensified in February 2022 when Russia began an invasion of Ukraine on a large scale.
The worst refugee crisis to hit Europe since World War II has also resulted from it.
Transdniestria:
Other areas of Russia’s territory are the subject of conflicts, including a small area known as Transdniestria, which is situated along Moldova’s border with Ukraine.
Early in the 1990s, Transdniestria declared its independence from Moldova and allegiance to Moscow, and the situation has been referred to as a “frozen conflict” ever since.
The majority of Transnistrians are citizens of Moldova despite a continuous Russian military presence there. Russians, Moldovans, Romanians, and Ukrainians make up the major ethnic groups.
Kuril Islands:
A 56-island volcanic archipelago known as the Kuril Islands is currently governed by Russia. The ongoing issue is a result of Japan’s claim to the islands.
The main obstacle to Japan and Russia signing a peace treaty to formally conclude World War II is this disagreement.
Senkaku (Diaoyu) islands:
The distant, energetic islands that are referred to as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China have long been the subject of a territorial dispute between these two countries.
The islands were governed by the Japanese after being seized by the US during World War II. Before 1895, when Japan’s government asserts, the islands were allegedly deserted. Since the fourteenth century, China has claimed ownership and discovery.
Following the discovery of gas and oil resources in 1968, the conflict over these islands grew more heated. Numerous observers caution that the conflict may worsen given China’s increasing assertiveness and power.
Taiwan:
The People’s Liberation Army of Mao Zedong, which adopted the name People’s Republic of China (PRC), swiftly overthrew the Chinese government on the mainland.
Chiang Kai-shek’s nationalist regime established the Republic of China (ROC) while living in exile on the island.
The ROC still sees itself as the genuine government of China, both on the island and the mainland, despite the PRC’s claim of sovereignty over Taiwan.
Jammu and Kashmir:
The territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which is split between India, Pakistan, and China, has been up for debate ever since the British gave up control of the area in 1947. China joined the scene in 1962, following the Sino-Indian War. The Trans-Karakoram Tract and Aksai Chin are currently under Chinese sovereignty.
Western Sahara:
Since Spain’s departure from the region in 1976, the former Spanish colony of Western Sahara has been mired in political uncertainty. Since then, the Saharawis, the area’s original inhabitants, have campaigned for their independence from Morocco.
Morocco has succeeded in annexing the resource-rich desert covering around 100,000 square miles (259,000 square km), despite the fact that it was not recognised internationally. There is still work to be done to find a solution.
The Korean Peninsula:
Technically speaking, the Korean War was never truly over. The armistice between North and South Korea was never followed by a peace treaty.
The separation of Korea into South Korea (Republic of Korea) and North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is the basis of the ongoing conflict. Both assert to be Korea’s lone legitimate government.
Antarctica:
Several nations claimed claims about Antarctica, but since the Antarctica Treaty was signed in 1959, the international community has not recognised these claims.
The agreement prohibited nations from annexing any area of Antarctica. However, seven nations have made territorial claims, including Argentina, Australia, Chile, France, New Zealand, Norway, and the UK.
Somaliland:
The struggle for control of the continent by colonial powers like Britain and France led to the current borders of Africa. All of the Somali lands, with the exception of French Somaliland, were combined under British military rule during World War II. Up to
Somalia’s independence in 1960, this persisted.
The northern part of Somaliland, however, proclaimed its independence in 1991 during the civil war. The international community as well as Somalia have not recognised the area.
