In the 1979 sci-fi horror picture Alien, director Ridley Scott introduced the world to protagonist Ellen Ripley. Ripley, played by a teenage Sigourney Weaver, began as simply another member of the crew on the spaceship Nostromo, but the badass alien warrior she became became a Hollywood icon. It also demonstrated that female leads in science fiction films were a force to be reckoned with.

Natalie Portman stars in the science fiction film Annihilation. She plays Lena, a cellular biology professor and former US Army soldier determined to discover what happened to her husband. He vanished while investigating The Shimmer, a mysterious zone caused by a meteor that crashed in Florida.
When Lena’s husband’s illness deteriorates, another set of people is ready to be thrown into The Shimmer. Lena joins the trek with three other women. The women rapidly realise that The Shimmer is nothing like they thought, and danger lurks around every corner. The picture also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Oscar Isaac, in addition to Portman.
Anon is a Netflix original sci-fi film starring Amanda Seyfried and Clive Owen. Anon takes place in a future society when privacy no longer exists. In this civilization, everyone has an optical implant that allows the authorities to record all they see. Owen plays Detective Sal Friedland, whose life intersects with a young woman who triggers a fault in Sal’s implant. Their interaction is not documented. Sal must now study this woman to find out why she cannot be recorded. Anon was written and directed by Andrew Niccol.
Stowaway is a suspenseful Netflix original film featuring Anna Kendrick as a medical researcher/doctor on a two-year journey to Mars with three other people. The astronauts have difficulties when they discover an unintentional stowaway on board. To make matters worse, when the fourth guy is discovered, he accidentally damages the apparatus that eliminates carbon dioxide so the astronauts may breathe clean air.
There is just enough oxygen for three individuals to reach Mars without this equipment. They then discover that the algae that was assisting in the creation of oxygen has been partially destroyed, leaving only enough oxygen for two astronauts. There will have to be decisions made. With Kendrick as the crew, Daniel Dae Kim, Shamier Anderson, and Toni Collette star.
I Am Mother:
I Am Mother is a Netflix original that follows a young girl who is raised by a robot in a bunker in a post-apocalyptic world. The bunker was built to begin repopulating the earth following an extinction event. Daughter, as she is known, is interested in the outside world and wishes to explore it, but Mother will not let her out.
Daughter hears a woman outside the bunker while exploring the airlock. When she opens the airlock, she finds a wounded woman in a hazmat suit. When the injured mother informs her there is no pollution on the outside of the bunker, the daughter’s curiosity gets even stronger.
What Happened to Monday:
What Happened to Monday is yet another Netflix sci-fi film starring Noomi Rapace. The story takes place in a dystopian future when overpopulation has resulted in a one-child mandate. Septuplets are given the names of each day of the week when they are born.
However, due to this policy, they must all remain in hiding, only coming out when they appear to be the same person. When Monday goes missing, the surviving sisters start looking into it, placing themselves in more danger than they had anticipated. Glenn Close and Willem Dafoe also appear in What Happened to Monday.
