Miss Arizona USA, a Tempe police officer, hopes that her platform will encourage others and close the gap between law enforcement and communities across the country.
Candace Kanavel said on Wednesday’s episode of America’s Newsroom, “I’m hoping that with this title, people can see me, see that I’m a police officer, and just know that all law enforcement have families, they have other hobbies that they’re interested in.” I believe we can begin to close the gap between law enforcement and the community if we, without necessarily removing our uniforms, look past them, get to know one another personally, and show empathy for one another.
Following her victory as Miss Arizona USA last month, Kanavel will compete as the state’s representative in the Miss USA pageant later this year. She has been in pageants for 11 years, and she competed for Miss Arizona USA six times before taking home the crown. After taking a criminal justice course in college, Kanavel claimed that she first thought about becoming a police officer. She was introduced to someone at the Tempe Police Department by her professor, a former Phoenix police officer.

Kanavel acknowledged that there has been a growing “strain” between the community and law enforcement in recent years. She hopes that her position will help to humanise police officers by demonstrating that even those who wear uniforms have interests and pastimes outside of work.
